Wayne M. Mattingly of Elkhart died at his home Sunday morning November 12, 2017, at the age of 83.
Wayne was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Virginia Pettit Mattingly and John Morgan Mattingly. In the early 1940’s Wayne, his younger brother David, and their mom returned to the Pettit family farm in the Roanoke Valley of Virginia. In 1953 both Wayne and David enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Later Wayne used his savings and G.I. bill to go to college in Winona Lake, IN. There he met and after their graduation married Ruth ( Henry) his wife of 53 years.
Wayne and Ruth made their home first in Warsaw, then Wakarusa and finally in Elkhart. Ruth taught math in the Wa-Nee School System for 45 years. Wayne also taught (Language arts and history) for 6 years before becoming a broker of real estate as well as life and health insurance.
Wayne was preceded in death by his father, his mother (who lived her last 25 years in Elkhart) and his brother David and his wife Jane who made their home in Wakarusa.
Wayne is survived by his wife Ruth; his son Mark (wife Janice) of Carmel, IN; 7 grandchildren, Kyle Mandla of San Diego; Kristin Moghli of Chicago; Alec Mandla (wife Shelby) of Indianapolis; Ashton and Caitlin Mattingly of Bloomington and twins Karis and Kassidy Mattingly of Carmel.
In accordance with Wayne’s wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral service. His cremains will be buried in the family burial plot in Virginia.
