VIRGINIA (MIKEL) SMITH

November 19, 1935 – November 11, 2023

ELKHART- Virginia (Mikel) Smith, 87, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday November 11, 2023, at her residence in Elkhart.  She was born November 19, 1935, in Mishawaka, Indiana to Virgil R. & Florence E. (Hawkins) Mikel.

     On August 8, 1975, she married Arthur L. Smith.  He preceded her in death on August 11, 2020, in Elkhart.   Surviving are her children, Terry (Lorie) New of Elkhart, Donald New of Goode, Ronald (Tiffany) Digly-New of Greensboro, NC, Debra Clark of South Bend, IN; her stepchildren, Pam Wetzel of Osceola, IN and Cheryl (Ron) Burris of Granger, IN.  Also surviving are her siblings, Carolyn (Marvin) Rutherford of CO, Irma Jackson of Elkhart, George Mikel of Bremen, IN, Charles Mikel of AR.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Florence Mikel, her husband Arthur, a stepson, Dwight Smith, a daughter-in-law Jayne Digly-New, 3 brother, Bemis Mikel, John Mikel of Wakarusa, William Mikel of FL. and 5 sisters, Ruth Mikel, Mary Mikel, Wilma Hepler, Ruby Unsicker of Bremen, IN, and Joy VanDekeere.  Also preceded in death by 2 grandsons, McCartney Ryker and Chad Smith

     Virginia graduated in 1954 from Jimtown High School.  She worked at CTS Corporation for over 40 years, retiring in 1998.  Virginia was a long-time member of the Northside Baptist Church in Elkhart.  Virginia was very involved with the women’s ministry at Northside.  She loved to play dominos with her family and friends from Northside on Friday afternoons. 

     Funeral services for Virginia will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday November 18, 2023, at the Northside Baptist Church, 53198 C.R. 9, Elkhart, IN 46514.  Pastor Carl Henry will preside, and burial will follow in Olive (West) Cemetery.  Friends may visit with the family for 1 hour prior to the start of the service at the church.

     Waterman-Westbrook-Clouse Funeral Home is entrusted with her care.  Memorial contributions may be given to the church.
