ELKHART - Artis L. James Sr., 83, of Elkhart passed away at 6:35 a.m. On Thursday August 17, 2016 at Kindred Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born on August 8, 1933 in Trenton, TN to the late Julius & Dink (Strozier) James.
On March 16, 1974 in Elkhart he married Patricia Jordan; she passed away on October 18, 2009.
Artis is survived by three sons: Artis James Jr., of Atlanta, GA, Alphonso James Sr. of Elkhart, Darnell (Hannah) James of Grand Rapids, MI, five daughters: Denise Dison, Rosalyn (Victor) Parker , both of Grand Rapids, MI, Renee Dison of Atlanta, GA, Angela (David) Small of Indianapolis, Annette (Calvin) James of Elkhart, two sisters: Katherine Johnson, Genevia Sherrod, both of Elkhart, 21 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: a daughter, Sheila Jordan, three brothers, Horace Tiggs Sr., Willie Tiggs, Jesse James, a sister, Helen James, a grandson, Alphonso James Jr. and a granddaughter, Artina James.
Artis worked as a cement finisher for various construction companies, and also as a bartender for LA Lounge.
Visitation for friends and family will be from 5-8pm on Thursday August 25, 2016 at Unity Church of God in Christ. Funeral services will be held at 12:00pm on Friday August 26, 2016 at Agape Missionary Baptist Church, 248 W. Wolf Elkhart, IN. Superintendent W.C. Hackworth will be officiating. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.
Artis was a life-time member of the D.A.V #9, a life member of the V.F.W Post 9944, A.M. Vets post #66, Bristol American Legion Post #143, and Cement Mason Local #101. Artis was an Army veteran of the Korean War. DAV #19 & the US Army will have a graveside Military Service.
